About the Team

We pride ourselves on being a friendly, fun, supportive, and caring remote team of mostly part-timers. We believe that our work as accountants is meaningful, we love learning new things and collaborating with each other, and we recognize the importance of how what we do serves and sustains our personal lives. The book “What’s Your And?” by John Garrett is a guiding light for our company culture. Ultimately, our focus is on personal relationships and kindness – both internally with our team members and externally with our clients, readers, and colleagues. We think people who feel respected are inclined to do great work.

Julie Herwitt, CPA

Tax Specialist

Julie’s life path has been anything but straight. As a teenager she wanted to be a fashion designer, but somehow ended up becoming an accountant. Recently, she came full circle and started designing handbags and women’s clothes. Julie has worked as a CPA at Arthur Andersen, a mid-size real estate firm and three smaller CPA firms. She had her own firm with 5 employees in Chicago for 8 years, before deciding to move to the woods of Indiana where she now resides with her husband and two large Bernese Mountain Dogs. She loves assisting small business owners with their tax and accounting needs, as well as hiking, kayaking, reading, cooking, and designing and sewing her bags and clothes.

Kendra Walker

Senior Accountant

Kendra Walker is a powerhouse of a senior accountant! Her ability to navigate complex issues, support her colleagues, and implement innovative solutions ensures that the team is well-prepared to handle any challenge that arises. Not only does she bring her expertise to the table, but she also serves as a mentor and problem-solver for the bookkeeping team, ensuring that everyone is supported and educated in their roles. Her experience in both accounting and entrepreneurship gives her a unique perspective on the challenges faced by business owners.

It’s impressive how she balances her professional life with her personal interests and family commitments. Riding and competing on horseback and quilting are both such enriching hobbies, offering her a chance to unwind and express her creativity. And being actively involved in her children’s activities speaks volumes about her dedication to her family.

Ali Szymanski

Bookkeeper & Admin

Ali Szymanski represents the quiet side of our firm – introspective, thoughtful, and organized, she helps us keep our act together. As part of her administrative duties she is in charge of company workflows and procedures; she also works directly with clients on bookkeeping, 1099s, and chasing down documentation. Her intrinsic sense of compassion and a desire to help others led her to getting a Masters in Education while working for us part-time – at which point she realized she could make just as much of a difference in the world helping small business owners… and officially joined the team. Her wild side comes out when enjoying motorcycling, visiting breweries, as well as making candles and other arts and crafts. She and her partner Andrew have two beautiful young children who love to laugh and smile, and two rambunctious cats – all of whom keep life interesting. They enjoy sharing the bounty of their summer garden with their little peanuts.

Sarah Loertscher

Bookkeeper

Sarah Loertscher’s special brand of caring radiates across firm members and our clients – in fact, it’s her love of relieving stress and removing obstacles for others that led her to bookkeeping in the first place. After years running her own company as a jewelry designer, as well as managing businesses from boutique stores to tech startups, she kept seeing that the weight and confusion of “not knowing” about finances was often the biggest obstacle keeping sole proprietors from flourishing. Her desire to address that, combined with her attention to detail and affinity for process-creating, motivated her to transition to bookkeeping, and she has been supporting these business owners at the hearts of our communities ever since. From Indiana to North Carolina to Seattle… to the beautiful Catskills of New York State, she has seen them create special spaces, and has helped keep them growing and healthy. A devoted nature-lover, she and her partner Eliott are currently working on building a small mushroom farm, as her happiest place is when her hands are in the dirt and her head is in the clouds.

Ally McMurtry

Bookkeeper

Ally McMurtry is a dynamic business strategist with a flair for organization and efficiency. At home, Ally enjoys a vibrant family life with her partner, two energetic kiddos, two lively dogs, and two naughty ginger cats. Outside of work, she embraces life through reading, porch dates with her husband, and hobbies like cooking and gardening.
